Vandoorne joined McLaren in 2016 as a reserve driver. At the Bahrain Grand Prix, he had to step in for Fernando Alonso, and finished 10th becoming the first reserve driver to score points on a debut, since Vettel in 2007.
It was later announced that in 2017, Button would be retiring, leaving the race seat open for Vandoorne. He raced for the team for two seasons until end of the 2018 season.
