Audi’s arrival in Formula 1® opened a new chapter in a motorsport story stretching back more than a century.
Long before joining the F1® grid, the four rings had built a reputation across some of motorsport’s most demanding disciplines. From quattro changing the landscape of rallying to 13 overall victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Audi’s racing history has been shaped by engineering, innovation and a willingness to take on different challenges.
Formula 1® would become the next.
Audi announced its plans to enter the championship in 2022, with the major technical regulation changes arriving in 2026 providing the opportunity to develop a new power unit and enter as a full works team.
Central to those plans was Sauber. With more than three decades of F1® experience behind it, the Swiss racing operation had been home to a number of notable drivers, including Charles Leclerc during his debut season. Audi’s takeover of Sauber provided an established foundation for its entry, combining the existing operation in Hinwil with a power unit developed specifically for the new era of Formula 1®.
Nico Hülkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto provided continuity through that transformation. Having raced together for Sauber in 2025, the pair remained as team-mates when Audi made its F1® debut in 2026.
The team scored its first World Championship points at its very first Grand Prix, with Bortoleto finishing ninth in Australia. It was an early milestone in a story that remains at its beginning, as Audi establishes its own identity and ambitions within Formula 1®.
