Ayrton Senna captured the hearts of so many fans and is considered one of the most brilliant drivers in the history of Formula One, but he was always different from the other greats. What made Senna sensational was the smoothness to his driving, despite it coming from a place of desire and drive, and not the calculated and scientific style that most greats have. Perhaps Senna is most famous for nothing ever being enough.

Similarly, Senna is separated from other champions for his formidable commitment to pushing the boundaries lap after lap after lap. Taking it easy when he had a comfortable lead was not a concept that Senna understood, his passion would not allow him to let off, his desire meant that he couldn’t drive at anything less than 100%.

The 1990 season was one of fierce battle. Senna and Prost had spent 1988 and 1989 driving alongside each other at McLaren, taking one championship each. In 1990 Senna remained at McLaren and Prost left for Ferrari. Just because the two stars of the era were no-longer driving for the same team meant by no means that the fight would get any less robust. If anything, the two fought harder. By the end of 1990, the two drivers were split by only 7 points. 71 for Prost, and 78 for Senna! The Brazilian would take his second World Championship, beating his French rival to the title after they infamously collided, again, at the Japanese GP. This tragic weekend was a wakeup call to Formula 1 that they need to drastically increase the safety standards.
