Ayrton Senna 1993 McLaren F1® Team Race Used MP4/8 Left-hand Rear Wing Endplate

This rear wing endplate comes from the McLaren MP4/8, raced by Ayrton Senna in 1993, which marked his last year with the team. Senna’s performances that season remain legendary, particularly his victory at Donington Park for the European Grand Prix, often regarded as one of the greatest drives in Formula One® history. 

His victory was sealed following his ‘Lap of the Gods’, as it was referred, where he went from fifth places to first on the initial lap despite extreme conditions. His win was made even more impressive by the 86+ second gap between himself and second place, and the fact that he lapped the entire field besides Damon Hill. 

The MP4/8 – Clever Engineering 

The McLaren MP4/8, powered by a Ford HB V8 engine, was not the fastest car on the grid, but its advanced active suspension and chassis design made it competitive in Senna’s hands. Despite being outgunned by the dominant Williams-Renault, Senna won five races and finished runner-up in the Championship, showcasing his unmatched skill and determination. 

The MP4/8 was the most advanced McLaren that Senna ever drove with a semi-automatic transmission, active suspension, early telemetry and advanced (for the time) traction control. Even the iconic Ron Dennis, the team principal of the race team and founder of what is now McLaren Automotive described it as one of the best cars they ever made. 

Race Used Rear Wing Endplate 

This authentic left-side rear wing endplate was used during the 1993 season. As part of the aerodynamic package, the rear wing generated critical downforce, helping Senna extract extraordinary performance from a car that on paper should not have been a title contender.  

The design of the endplate appears to be a high downforce spec which matches those used in Monaco, Magny Cours, Suzuka and Adelaide – Adelaide marked Senna’s last victory. The difference between the high downforce and low downforce kit is the width of the endplate. This wing is wider indicating the main plane was longer and larger. 

For collectors, this piece carries enormous significance, linking directly to Senna’s final McLaren campaign and one of his most memorable years in F1®.
