Red Bull Racing 2011 Grand Prix Used RB7 DRS Flap #2

The Role of the DRS Flap 

In F1®, the DRS, or Drag Reduction System, is a moveable flap of bodywork that is built into the rear wing of the car. Its purpose is to reduce aerodynamic drag and increase speed in a straight line.  

When activated in DRS Zones, the flap opens to create a gap in the wing which allows air to flow more freely and reduce downforce. This action gives the driver a speed boost, which is why you see it being used on straights and in prime overtaking opportunities. 

However, DRS can’t be used at just any moment. There are specific conditions in which this special feature can be activated... During the race, drivers must be within one second of the car ahead whilst also in the designated DRS detection points, in order to benefit from DRS. 

Red Bull Racing’s 2011 Championship 

The 2011 driver line-up consisted of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, who had been paired together at the team since 2009. Together they’d helped the team secure the Constructors’ World Championship for the first time in 2010, meanwhile Vettel clinched his first Drivers’ title by four points. 

The next season (2011) was even more dominant, with Vettel this time claiming the title, 122 points clear of his nearest rival. He became a double World Champion and would go on to score two more consecutive titles in 2012 and 2013...as did the team.  

By 2013, Red Bull Racing had consistently won four back-to-back Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships and were undeniably the ones to beat.
