Austrian Grand Prix
Red Bull Ring
Set among the Styrian mountains, the Red Bull Ring provides one of Formula 1®'s most picturesque settings. Its compact layout combines long straights, fast corners and significant elevation changes, creating a circuit where overtaking is possible and small differences in performance can quickly become decisive. Alongside the racing, the Austrian Grand Prix has become known for its passionate crowds and distinctive festival atmosphere.
The Austrian Grand Prix first appeared on the Formula 1® World Championship calendar in 1964, before the Red Bull Ring's predecessor, the Österreichring, hosted its first Grand Prix in 1970. The circuit was later shortened and modernised to become the A1-Ring, before Formula 1® returned to the venue in 1997. Following further redevelopment, the circuit returned to the calendar in 2014 as the Red Bull Ring, where it has remained a fixture ever since.
The circuit's history includes some of the sport's most memorable Austrian moments. Niki Lauda became the first Austrian driver to win his home Grand Prix in 1984, while the following decade saw one of Formula 1®'s closest finishes when Elio de Angelis beat Keke Rosberg by just 0.050 seconds in 1982. In the modern era, Max Verstappen has become a dominant figure at Spielberg, while the venue has also provided the setting for some of the most closely contested races of recent seasons.
The Red Bull Ring has also become closely associated with the modern Formula 1® calendar. Its return in 2014 marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Austrian Grand Prix, while the unusual 2020 season saw Austria host the opening race of the championship before a second race at the same circuit one week later. In 2026, George Russell converted pole position into victory after a late challenge from Max Verstappen, with Kimi Antonelli completing the podium. The Austrian Grand Prix is now secured at the Red Bull Ring through 2041, ensuring the circuit's place in Formula 1® for years to come.
