Portuguese Grand Prix
Autódromo Internacional do Algarve
Set among the hills of Portugal's Algarve region, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve provides one of Formula 1®'s most dramatic modern settings. Better known as Portimão, the circuit combines sweeping corners, dramatic elevation changes and a distinctive undulating layout, creating a demanding challenge for drivers and a spectacular backdrop for the return of the Portuguese Grand Prix.
The Portuguese Grand Prix has a long history in Formula 1®, first joining the World Championship in 1958. The race has been held at several circuits over the years, including Boavista, Monsanto and Estoril, before Portimão welcomed Formula 1® for the first time in 2020. The 4.653km circuit had opened in 2008 and was originally designed as a modern testing and competition facility, with its elevation changes and flowing layout quickly earning praise from drivers.
Portimão produced memorable racing during its two previous Formula 1® appearances. In 2020, Lewis Hamilton recovered from a difficult opening lap to take victory and record his 92nd Grand Prix win, moving clear of Michael Schumacher's then-record total. The following year, Hamilton again stood on the top step, beating Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas in a race that showcased the circuit's challenging combination of fast corners and changing gradients.
In 2027, the Portuguese Grand Prix returns to the Formula 1® calendar, bringing the championship back to Portimão for the first time since 2021. With Portugal confirmed for 2027 and 2028, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve will once again provide a unique test for Formula 1®'s latest generation of cars, combining speed, elevation and technical precision across one of the calendar's most distinctive circuits.
