Chinese Grand Prix
Shanghai International Circuit
The Shanghai International Circuit provides one of Formula 1®'s most distinctive modern backdrops, combining a sweeping permanent circuit with the energy of one of the world's largest cities. Since its debut, the Chinese Grand Prix has brought Formula 1® to Shanghai, creating a race weekend defined by a unique circuit layout, passionate crowds and the unmistakable character of the city.
The circuit hosted its first Formula 1® race in 2004, becoming one of two new venues to join the calendar that season. Designed by Hermann Tilke, the 5.451km circuit features 16 corners, long straights and some of the sport's most distinctive sequences, including the ever-tightening Turns 1 and 2 and the high-speed Turns 7 and 8. The layout was designed around the Chinese character for 'shang', meaning 'upwards', giving the circuit a distinctive shape when viewed from above.
The Chinese Grand Prix has produced a number of significant moments throughout its history. Rubens Barrichello won the inaugural race in 2004, while Michael Schumacher claimed his 91st and final Formula 1® victory at Shanghai in 2006. Lewis Hamilton has also enjoyed considerable success at the circuit, with six victories making him the most successful driver in the history of the Chinese Grand Prix.
After a five-year absence, the Chinese Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1® calendar in 2024, with Max Verstappen taking victory in the first race back in Shanghai. The circuit has continued to play an important role in the modern championship, hosting Sprint weekends in recent seasons and providing the setting for Kimi Antonelli's maiden Grand Prix victory in 2026. With its place on the calendar secured through 2030, the Shanghai International Circuit will once again welcome Formula 1® in 2027.
