Qatar Grand Prix
Lusail International Circuit
The Qatar Grand Prix joined the Formula 1® calendar for the first time in 2021, bringing the championship to the Lusail International Circuit on the outskirts of Doha. Originally built for MotoGP™ and completed in just over a year ahead of its first major motorcycle race in 2004, Lusail became Qatar's first Formula 1® venue when the Grand Prix made its debut. After a one-year absence in 2022, Formula 1® returned in 2023 as part of a long-term agreement with the circuit.
At 5.419km, Lusail features 16 corners and a fast, flowing layout dominated by medium and high-speed turns. More than one kilometre of the lap is taken up by the main straight, providing an important overtaking opportunity into Turn 1, while the remainder of the circuit places a premium on high-speed cornering and sustained aerodynamic performance. The track's floodlighting also allows the Grand Prix to take place at night, creating a distinctive setting in the Qatari desert.
The circuit has already developed a clear identity in its short Formula 1® history. Lewis Hamilton won the inaugural Grand Prix in 2021, while Max Verstappen has dominated the event since its return to the calendar, winning in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The 2024 edition also featured a Sprint, with Oscar Piastri taking victory in the shorter race before Verstappen went on to win the Grand Prix itself. In 2025, Verstappen again took the chequered flag, beating Oscar Piastri by almost eight seconds.
Now in 2027, Formula 1® returns to Lusail International Circuit for another Qatar Grand Prix, with the event scheduled to take place from 3 to 5 December as the penultimate round of the season. The weekend will once again combine the speed of one of Formula 1®'s fastest-flowing circuits with the atmosphere of a night race in the Qatari desert. Lusail will also host another Sprint weekend in 2027, adding an additional competitive session to one of the final events of the championship.
