Mexico City Grand Prix
Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez
The Mexico City Grand Prix has a long history in Formula 1®, with the first World Championship race held at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in 1963. The circuit was built in 1959 within Mexico City's Magdalena Mixiuhca sports park, with Formula 1® cars first appearing there in a non-championship race in 1962. Jim Clark won the inaugural World Championship race a year later, beginning a relationship between Mexico City and Formula 1® that has continued across several generations.
At 2,285 metres above sea level, the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is the highest circuit on the Formula 1® calendar. Its 4.304km layout features 17 corners and a long main straight, with the altitude creating thinner air that affects both aerodynamic performance and engine power. One of its most distinctive sections is the Foro Sol stadium, where the circuit passes through a bowl surrounded by grandstands and thousands of passionate fans before returning to the final corners.
The circuit has produced some memorable moments throughout its history. Gerhard Berger took his first Formula 1® victory at Mexico City in 1986, while Nigel Mansell produced one of the race's most spectacular finishes in 1990 when he passed Gerhard Berger around the outside of the Peraltada. The modern era has been dominated by Max Verstappen, who has won five times since the race returned to the calendar in 2015. The event has also become renowned for its passionate home support, with the Foro Sol providing one of the most distinctive atmospheres on the Formula 1® calendar.
Now in 2027, Formula 1® returns to the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for another Mexico City Grand Prix, continuing a successful modern relationship between the sport and the Mexican capital. With its unique altitude, historic layout and extraordinary atmosphere, the race has become one of the most distinctive weekends on the Formula 1® calendar. The event is secured through 2028, ensuring Mexico City remains part of the championship for another chapter of its long-running Formula 1® history.
